January 2020 Press Release

Basil Raddy

Passion for your chosen hobby or pastime is now accepted to be one of the main factors in achievinggreater well-being and happiness, as thousands of enthusiastic caravaners and motorhome fans will agree.
A group of members within the Caravan and Motorhome Club can attest to the benefits of just that theory, because not only do they enjoy life with the Club, they meet throughout the year to follow their other love – singing.
The CAMC Singers meet to rehearse the programme which they will be presenting at various concerts across the UK, and the coming year will be a special one for several reasons.
Octogenarian Basil Raddy, is a prime example of the members who make the most of their hobbies, but knowing Basil’s Cornish history it’s hardly surprising his love of singing has been with him from a very early age.
Basil comes from the picturesque coastal town of Looe where he sang in the chapel choir from the age of 11 to 16. He then left home to be an apprentice draughtsman and where he met and married his late wife Glenys. They both sang in the local Gilbert & Sullivan group and later in the light opera group.
Basil is a now member of Chippenham Male Voice  Choir where his father-in-law was a founder member, and former musical director. The choir was formed in 1940, so 2020 will be their 80th anniversary year.
“Singing has been part of my life for as long as I remember – it’s a very important to me,” said Basil, who sings with the tenors in the Caravan and Motorhome Club Singers. He’s a relatively new member of the Singers, having joined in 2014 at the 2,500 Wiltshire Centre rally in Malmesbury, where he first heard the Singers perform.
He also makes good use of his skills from his former working life as a builder, by taking care of the Singers’ equipment, even building the portable staging that they use at concerts.
In between his busy times singing and supporting the life of the Singers, Basil pursues another passion – his love of canals, being one of the vital volunteers running regeneration working parties on the Wilts and Berks Canal near his home in Chippenham.
The Wilts and Berks Canal is a link to the more well-known Kennet and Avon Canal. A dedicated army of volunteers is working hard on its restoration, dredging where necessary, rebuilding locks and clearing culverts. This work, Basil does, come rain or shine, two days a week!
Like many members of the Caravan and Motorhome Club Singers, Basil enjoys singing in his home town, and next year two concerts will be held in the West country when the CAMC Singers will join the Chippenham Male Voice Choir to perform on Friday, September 11. The following evening, September 12, they will also perform with the Stuart Singers in Minchinhampton.
The Stuart Singers concert is a special event for the Singers, as proceeds will raise funds for the hospice which cared for a former member of the Singers in 2018.
Another important event during 2020 for the CAMC Singers will be their performance at the Club’s National in May at Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, which is also the 15th anniversary of when the Singers formed.
They meet around six times a year for weekend rehearsals, usually in central England as members come from all parts of the UK. Any CAMC members are welcome to visit one of the rehearsals to see how they are held, and more information of the Singers can be found on the website http://www.camc-singers.co.uk

Sept 2018  Press Release

THE countryside across the border of Wiltshire and Somerset has been ringing to the chimes of a group of singers who have more than the love of music in common.

They are all members of the Caravan and Motorhome Club Singers and were guest performers at the 25th Anniversary celebrations of the Wessex region of the Club over the Bank Holiday weekend in Frome.

After the performance, when they wowed their audience with songs such as Do You Hear the People Sing, Amarillo, Sweet Caroline and a amazing quodlibet of I Believe sung with Bach’s Ave Maria, some of the choir moved on to Kington Langley in Wiltshire.

Here, they enjoyed a week-long holiday rally which involved more music, sightseeing and an interesting talk by Alan Lank, on the Wilts and Berks Canal Restoration project.

The Caravan and Motorhome Club Singers meet for rehearsals around five times a year, usually in central England, as members come from as far afield as North Yorkshire and Cumbria to West Sussex and Somerset.
